Unstained by the workings of karma, this consciousness represents our true, eternal self. This perspective on the human cosmos is the fruit of thousands of years of intense self-examining investigation into the nature of consci ousness.   The nine consciousnesses can be model of as divergent layers of consciousness which ar constantly run together to take our lives. The Sanskrit word vijn?na, which is translated as consciousness, includes a wide-eyed range of activities, including sensation, learning and conscious thought.

          The first five of these consciousnesses are the familiar senses of sight, hearing, smell, savoring and touch.   The sixth consciousness is the function that integrates and processes the dissimilar sensory information to form an overall picture or thought, identifying what it is that o ur five senses are communicating to us.   !
